Print Specs: What is Gutter, Gripper, and Number Up?.

Gutter: Gutter refers to the amount of space provided between each crop mark, usually 1/8 or a 1/4 inch.

Gripper: Gripper refers to the device on a printing press that holds and pulls the paper through its printing path. The gripper margin is the unprintable blank edge on which the paper is gripped as it passes through a printing press, usually measuring a half inch or less.

Number Up (2-up, 4-up, 10-up): Refers to how many times an item will be laid up on a sheet of paper. Most printing is done on very large sheets of paper, so the artwork with fit on that sheet more than once. The sample below is considered a 6-up layout - the business card is up on the sheet 6 times.
